Post # 1: Is technology a necessary evil?

Technology is embraced by some who see it as a panacea for creating a global environment that liberates and democratizes. Others see technology as an evil that permeates our culture with filth and is fraught with dangers. Where does the truth lie? Is technology a necessary evil or a powerful tool for positive social change? Talk about this from your own experiences? What do you see in the community around you?

Personally the pull and the power of the internet has had a physical affect in my community. Prior to April 2005 my community was accessing the internet via dial-up. Since the power of Vibe with a 5MB connection, I have seen social changes. Like Starlit had mentioned in her blog, she goes on the net to do her rounds of cyber socializing with her cup of coffee. More and more people tend to gather online in these social networks (1st it was MySapce & msn, now it’s FaceBook). People especially the younger generation can stay on these web spaces for hours and hours. This means they are less and less physically active, resulting in younger children having higher obesity rates and early on set of diabetic traits (Don’t forget I work in a Health Centre and we study trends in our community).

Technology is creating a smaller world in a big way, not only in terms of the speed and ease of communication, but in a multitude of ways that the ordinary person is not even aware of. To think that a person could now travel to any destination on the earth within 24 hours is something I ‘m sure our ancestors never even dreamed of, though this is what has been inferred in tradition and prophesy.

I have had many thoughts on both sides of this issue. As to the question, “Where does the truth lie?” one must consider what the word means. In a global world with such vast ideological differences the truth lies in the manifestation of one’s own beliefs. There is no one version of what is true. No black and white, only shades of grey. Every human will experience “truth” in his or her own way.

The rapid advance of technology is creating a global environment. But like a double- edged sword it has the potential for many things. As was stated previously,

“Technology is embraced by some who see it as a panacea for creating a global environment that liberates and democratizes. Others see technology as an evil that permeates our culture with filth and is fraught with dangers” - “the necessary evil”.

Some others see technology as a way to get rich, some see it as a way to build their own social/economic/spiritual/cultural/educational/
whatever communities. Some see it is a way to get their message heard…I’ve never seen and heard so many politicians. And yes, the one sad truth is that there is filth and danger.

Technology has brought us to the point where it will be soon be impossible to reverse the consequences of this rapid advance. That’s what is being said about global warming. It blew me away a couple months ago when I saw a satellite image of the north where a giant ice shelf broke away. I felt the same way the first time I saw Dolly the clone on TV. It’s a big question in the minds of many. That is true. That’s my thought for the day.

I think the truth lies some where’s in the middle. I think technology opens the way for new learning opportunities. Throughout the last century we have become a society based on new technologies. From the invention of the telephone to the internet, we have discovered new ways for communicating and sharing of information. Without such new technologies where would we be today? But I think technology can only be liberating for those who have the opportunity to use it. There are still many countries that do not have access to the internet or other new technologies. I think the real evil lies in that many people take for granted of such opportunities, and have used technology in ways that are harmful to others and to the environment.

I'm not completely sure the question ask "Is technology a necessary evil" the real question? Technology just is as mentioned in Jeff's lecture last Wednesday. History has proven so by our very existance. The question I see is more how do we cope with the excelerated advancement of technology. Is it advancing faster than we can cope with the enivatible impact on society be it social or economic in nature. Criminal activity has found new ground, and as social beings have we begun to loose the ability to maintain a holistic connection to each other. So much to think about and yet as i make comments new questionsand challenges emerge on this subject. Food for thought for all.

I think that technology can be a necessary evil, especially amongst the elder generations. My boyfriend's grandmother can't work use a computer, but can only to play solitaire. So in that way I think it can be an evil. But if your talking about the younger generation I don't see it in that perpective, but as a tool to learn and deal with the coming of age as technology grows.

We had no electricity in our community last Thursday. Within an hour of the outage, most organizations had shut down and sent their employees home. We had nice natural lighting, running water and enough heat to last most of the day, so we decided to stay a bit longer.

The problem was, we just stood around ... wondering ... what do we do know. The technology for our fancy telephone system didn't work either! We were completely cut off from the outside world ... wait someone has a cell phone!

Some of us found some work that didn't require technology, but there wasn't much.

I believe that we made technology necessary. Communication, research, producing documents, accounting, etc. have been made easier with technology. We would not even consider going back to the way things were.

Is it evil? Well only people can be evil and evil people use technology to do evil things.

Where does the truth lie? Tech, good or bad!
It’s a fine line, It’s like walking a tight rope, or maybe it’s like being an ‘Indian’ meaning First Nation, “just walk in balance will ya”
From my own experience, Technology has been both good and bad. First of, technology has brought to me a new way of communicating and it has helped me to multi-task. For instance, before the cell phone texting option came into the scene, my daughter and I (who loves to travel @ the world) would have normally talked either on the phone or MSN. With the use of the phone, she could easily hang up on me if she felt offended by my remarks. As well, I could just as easily go ‘off-line’ on MSN if I felt our discussion was turning into a big disagreement.
I know that ‘text messaging’ has saved many a day from what could have turned into many cold shoulder days if we had not been able to fix the issues through text messaging. Therefore being able to explain yourself thoroughly without interruptions or rude hang-ups is what often saved the day for me. Hey! I love text messaging! My husband thinks it is great too, he doesn’t text but he’s glad to receive text from me, usually just a small reminders. He says if it was a phone call I was sending, often times he would have had to leave a meeting, or even a work site just to pick up a receiver or the cell phone. So the cell and text have played a positive role in my own personal experience.
But as you have read, the MSN didn’t help much but it was fun while it lasted. I still use MSN to chat with my sister who lives in TO; but with her, it’s different, because our conversations are never serious, I just fill her in with what is happening in my family and in our community.
The Personal Computer, well now that can be a problem for children. Personally, my 16 yr old son has managed to respect the guidelines I have for using MY computer. First of, he knows it is mine, not his, and that he can buy his own if and when he can afford one, and secondly he knows that I monitor the sites he has been into; his time is limited and I constantly inform him of my latest concerns, which I usually get from Oprah or Phil. He’s no angel, he had made comments in the MYSPACE about how he hates RAP and goes on and on, over-writing his opinions about it, but I have reminded him to replace the negative with a positive. He has done so. He will be on his own someday, and he too will simply have to know how to walk in balance… it’s about staying informed and about education.
PS, Hi KIM long time "no see" too.
I still don't see you, don't block me...invite me in to your blog.

Technology is a very useful tool to many people who are looking for various types of information, or to just sit back and relax in a global social environment.Technology may be a necessary evil if used for the purpose of creating different types of computer bugs or for the purpose of any crimminal behavior that could very well affect the lives of people all over the world. so i would say that technology could be evil if used the for the wrong purpose, and its only as evil as the person who is behind the keyboard.

What is the good of technology when you don’t have the power to run it? As Lorna mentioned in her class blog, the power outage last week stranded us. If we had wireless home phones they were of no use. Working at the office required some innovation (catching up on filing and heaven forbid writing something by hand). Which just goes to show that technology has its own evil necessity - electricity.

Yes I feel that technology is necessary in that it can be a powerful tool for positive social change. From our homework assignment, I watched Sir Ken Robinson’s pod cast and found it to be very insightful. It allowed me the chance to hear a motivated speaker whom I otherwise would not have known was out there. He is very profound in his speech and raises good questions and comments about the education system. This to me is one way in which positive social change can be achieved. Technology is opening doors which otherwise would not have been accessible.

For me personally, technology is a necessity. As to whether it is evil, it all depends on how I use it and how I allow it to influence my everyday life.

There is no getting away from technology, it is here to stay and as society continues to move forward, so will technology. Our task, then, is to ensure we make attempts to move along wtih it, teach ourselves and our children how to be safe and use it responsibly. The use of technology and the internet must be managed by us and not by it..which we often see with either family members, community, etc.

Personally I find that technology is both evil and good. From what I have learned and seen about today's technology for the evil part some people are using the 'power of the internet' to do some sick and twisted things which I do not want to get into. But on the good side instead of calling Tania in Austriala which cost money, all you have to do is set up a video/voice call through MSN and its free. Another example would be using Xbox Live where you can connect to anyone in the world and play the same game instead of sitting there alone, your sitting there alone talking to someone from England using a headset. Using today's technology is easy and its fast (most of the time). But then again if there's a power outage your pretty much out of luck. So as you can see I'm a 50/50 on the question.

"Is technology a necessary evil?"
I also think there is a fine line between the two. In my community today tech has all the younger generation glued to thier monitors. I'm not saying it is a bad thing because a lot of kids have more computer skills than thier parents. Now in todays society these kids are going to need these skills. My point is that these kids need to be informed that thier whole lives do not need to revolve around thier pc.
They still need to get out and get physical activity. Especially in first nation comunities where the diabetes rate is high than any other ethnic group. I think the advances in todays technology are great and great things are happening because of it. All i'm saying is that there has to be some kind of balance in these young peoples lives.

Technology can be good and bad,the negatives to it is lack of exercise,I find it also addicting,I use to catch myself on for hours(until i had children)and time passed so quickly, the time spent on the computer took time away from me doing something more physical.Someone else said "Technology is only as evil as the person behind it" and that is so true, some people use it to make inappropriate sites, there are even sites that are made just for gossip, but technology isn't all bad,it does have positive traits.Internet can entertain, pay bills, plan a trip, show you parts of the world, and give your information. So To me I really dont look at technology as being all that bad.

I think technolgy is great, it's opened allot of doors for allot of different things. I know little on how to work it..haha.. but i see the things it's doing around me, and I'm anxious to learn more about it. My children know way more abut it then I do, but I tink that goes with most of us parents (digital immagrants). I agree with what Heidi said..it is making our children allot less active, which in the long run, because of the obesity rates and the health problems that come along with it, will be a negative affect. I think we as parents and adults, we have to limit the amount of time that is spent online,I know in my house I had to set the timer for when the computer turns on and off so they wouldn't be spending all there time online. When we were younger, when we wanted t see our friends, we walked to their house and knocked on there doors, now all kids have to do is turn on the computer, I think it's kinda impersonel, but it's almost the only way kids no how to communicate now a days...scary... Technology is a necessary tool for social change,
Yet when in the wrong hands can be evil.

I was all for technology, the web, ATM machines, on star, cell phones, and banking online; that is until I watched “America Freedom to Fascism.” In the end of the film it showed just a computer screen, were the guy calls in a pizza, the lady could change screens in the touch of a second and just by your calling she knew who you were, what pizza you shouldn’t have due to your insurance company not wanting to pay out if you get sick due to his medical records she could also see, she also knew what magazine his wife bought him recently, and that he recently purchased tickets to Hawaii. So when you think about how we can be tracked at any moment with Onstar, our cell phones, that what web sights we visit are stored in our computers, who we chat with, what we are purchasing at the stores and on line I wonder if going forward with Technology is actually giving up our privacy and freedom!

I would have to say for me personally I stand pretty neutral on this question, because depending how others use it, I think yes that can be used for evil, but no matter how we feel about today's technology it will only continue to expand. But I also love the fact that i don't have to go the bank and pay my bills, it's also a great tool for the younger generation for school, its easier to do research, so depending how you view the technology, its a usefull tool to have and I love the fact that when I am away from the office I can communicate with my staff through email and on msn....

I find that as the world advances, technology is advancing faster then people ever believed it would. Everywhere you look, you see some form of technology being used, which it has it's Pro's & Con's just like anything else in life. There is alot more pro's then con's like paying bills, chatting with friends which is alot cheaper then a phone bill, locating long lost friends or family through various internet connections and let's not forget how technology speeded up alot of people's work and business. As I watch how my children have to surf the net for research for school, it makes me see how I am glad for technology but on the same note I wonder about those children whose parents can not afford the new technology products, that their children would need or use for enjoyment. I also see how my child with Cerebral Palsy can operate different work with the help of technology, or that with the aide of his electric wheelchair he can feel independant, and without technology that would have never been a thing that he would be able to feel. I think people think that technology is just computers and internet when it is a whole range of different things. Then the cons of it is hackers or people that use it for the wrong sick reasons. In all technology is here to stay and people need to learn it.

Technology is awesome I can remember when I thought Atari and electric typewriters were the best, and now we have virtual pets, where my daughter has to work to earn dollars to feed her pet.
Good for me I already feed two Cats. LOL
I love going on line to do my banking, map quest my trips so i am never lost anymore, and do virtual tours of hotels where i am staying...even before i get there.
I like checking the weather, cheking out the flyers from the local grocery store, check what's playing at the movies and shopping on e-bay...my favorite place to be, where everything is on sale...LoL.
I look for quilt patterns for my next blanket, send e- birthday cards, and facebook helps me keep in touch with things going on from next door, to the lunar eclispe coming up soon.
I listen to broadband radio, which i think is really cool, however i have a hard time to find great stations. If anyone knows any good stations e-mail me.

I thinked i "blogged" enough for one day, all this blogging is making my fingers sore...lol
I know I have bad humor. Untill next time Take Care

My views of technology are simple. Of course I think it's great that we are able to learn about these new technologies every day. I have had a few experiences with the internet and meeting someone from a different Country. We are currently married and have been for about 6 months now. We have been together for 5 years. I also have had a bad experience with someone hacking into my system and using my username and password, but you get through it.

Growing up we didn't have all these new gadgets. The younger generation are our future and I personally think they will be well informed with the new technology. Yes, the youth might stay online for several hours at a time, but it will pay off in the long run. As for me, I was always online doing different tasks. It has helped me in my field of work because I do know how to multitask. Working with different programs as well. Our reserve hasn't really gotten into the new high tech times because we don't even have high speed internet at our homes just yet.

Till then

IF we dont take the time to learn.. we will be left behind!

Yes I do Belive so. It is, and can be used for all the wrong things, but do we ever need what it has to offer us. The time we save, which in the business world, is money, the infomation we have access to, the things we can learn at the touch of a finger by far out weigh the negative aspects. Its kinda a catch 22, ur damned if you do, but you'll miss the life if you don't. As powerful of a resource as the world wide web is, and with all the colaboartive effotrs being appied to software development today, hopfully all the negative things that do come with surfing, can one day be over shadowed by all the positive ways people have come together to abolsh all the frauds and child safty issues and reservations that people rightfully have when they themselves, or their children are on the internet.

Like anything in life there is two sides of the story. There is a fine balance. As much as tecnology is good,,,,it can be harmfull. I remember one time watching a program on TV that was made in the 60's or 70's promoting technology. stating how all this great technology is going to make our lives so much easier, shorten the work week, We will be able to accomplish so much more. Wrong, now we just get more work to do in the same about of time. We are now abombarded with so much more. On the other hand, we have the world on our finger tips. We can travel the world without even leavin the house. However the world has access to your household and your private life. Whats more important? the message or the meduim, The meduim is the message. Is that how that commerical from Canadian Heritage moments. Now we are agrue how harmful tecnology is, and there are many cases and exampes. But also there are many reasons and example on how helpful tecnology is. Once again, I guess its how we as indiviuals use it. And like that other Heritage Canadian Moment Comerical, This Nation is called Ca NA I KA. its all in the translation.

Technology is necessary, but only in the wrong hands evil. Technology is great but one has to know their limits when it comes to using technology. On a daily basis I use technology, starting with my alarm clock in the morning, but the trick is to know how to handle yourself when technology leaves. Yes technology makes my life easier but when the power went out last week, I did not worry. When I could not watch the television, I picked up a book, when my kids could not play their video games, we played board games, could not use the stove so we used the fondue burner to cook hotdogs. Sure missed technology that day, but we still made it by pretty good, for one day. Technology is great, as long as you are prepared to live without it.

Yes, I think that technologie is good to have. It helps me to pay bills without waiting at the bank for so long in line. It's just not enough time when you are busy working. I can chat with multiple friends at once.. Can't forget about doing my lots of assignements and researches on the net.. books would costs more I would say .. we don't even have a public library.. So I think it's great.. My children love it, my son is only 3 and already is using the computer , all I have to do is plug in his VTECH and there he goes learning about numbers alphabets , colors and all kinds of things. He thinks it a game but he is learning.. that's great>>.

I feel that technology is a very powerful tool, and is making a large social change. The television made a great impact on our society, the airplane, the automobile, the digital watch, the calculator; these are within the past century. Before, they were luxury, today they are necessity. Today we have the cell phone, the interact card, the personal computer, the internet, wireless, video conference, On star, satellite TV, these within the past 25 yrs. The evil's I see is technology not being equal among all. Ex: larger urban area's have 1st view. The rural area's are in the dark, by the time a person in a less fortunate area gets the technology they may become a victim, not from being stupid, but by being naive ex: stolen identity, duplicated interact cards, tapped bank accounts, it goes on. The providers of technology concentrate on financial gain and not equality...this is my feeling on the direction of technology today.

Is technology good or is it bad? I don't know. It seems to me that technology is an excuse for some people to get rich and the poor getting poorer just trying to keep up with all these new conveniences of life today.

Yet i use it to communicate with friends accross the world!Things like facbook and Msn can be addictive to some people. There are some cases were people are addicted to their computers Just like a person on crack! lol haha! What i mean to say is that addiction can be deadly! How many People Freak out or get grumpy when threir technology is messing up or havent got their daily dose of blogging, facebooking, or msn.LoL! I believe that it all depends on the person using the technology (Osama BinLaden or muhammad ghandi)will determin the outcome! positve experience, or Necessary evil.

Anything can be made out to be evil, it depends on how you utilize technology. There are definitely predators out there when it comes to technology, example child pornography. There are people that use technology to prey on children. It’s good that that children use computers are a learning tool, but there is a downside to it as well.

There are definitely are pros and cons when it comes to technology advances. I see my community moving forward with technology. Due to our location it takes a bit longer to be updated. For instance, cell phones, we only got digital service in the summer of 2007. We still have to resort to dial-up. High speed is only being offered to the community businesses.

Tay said...

It would probably depend on how you use technology. Some people abuse it (ie. people who commit identity freud/hackers) and some people put it to good use (ie. programmers/students/teachers)! Also, many "older" people may look at it as an "evil" thing, while some "younger" people would look at it as a "normal" everyday thing that they use. I guess it all depends how you look at it!

The internet has definitely opened doors that could create harm to people, and when used in that manner harm children, example take their innocence from them by viewing and reading all the dirty things that are on the internet.
My opinion is getting to live in these days when technology is advancing on a regular is a blessing. Everything depends on each individual, there are a lot of sick people out there and if you think about it the internet is just proof. But that is just the world today if you aren't seeing it on the net you'll be seeing it one way or another. I don't think the argument of endangerment to youth should be a major relation to this.

A very important thing occurred to me at last class when Jeff’s computer lost power. If technology is not plugged in then it’s not much good to you. So by right’s, you’re only as good as your energy supply. Let’s just say hypothetically, that in our future we have a technological blackout. Does this mean we resort back to the caveman days where for the most part, the only way to communicate was through a few chuckles, grunts or groans and symbols, which by the way is pretty much what’s happening today. We have locked ourselves away from the real world so much so, that we are losing our ability to socialize with real people face to face.

It is disturbing to think that in the near future actual handwriting may become obsolete. Is our language diminishing as well so that it can fit into a more convenient message? For example: txt msgng. Bcz ppl r msgng all the tym. It does absolutely nothing to encourage the use of learning new words for our young and old alike and do we want to live in a world where speed is the constant rule and it’s only your fingers that do the walking and the talking? What does the future hold for our children? Am I just paranoid…thinking back, wasn’t T.V. suppose to cause the younger generation to forget how to read? Yah! I’m probably being paranoid.

Don’t get me wrong, it may sound like I’m down on technology, but I’m not really. I have no intentions of liberating myself from my computer. It has become an important tool to me. Texting, MSNing and facebook do not appeal to me. Call me old-fashioned. I’ve tried it but still prefer to pick-up the phone and hear an actual voice at the other end (sometimes that is impossible with all the automation). What I do like, is the fact that I can do all my banking online and if I need information it’s as easy as pressing enter and I have all the information I need on whatever subject that interests me. This is just a drop in the virtual bucket. Catch my views next time on using my satellite remote.

Technology can be the greatest tool, or the worst thing that was ever been invented, in reason why I say this, is because we have grown to depend and we have very much adapted to the technolgy around us, anything so basic can be a big burden in our lives, like why walk when we can drive, why write and erase when we click and remove, stuff like that. Technology has become a convinience in ourlives. I depend on my laptop, with emails and paying bills, checking statements, instead of waiting in line to do these things, I just to click here and there, its all done. Technolgy has also done affect on our abilities and mind to stay active and and be more social, reason why I say this, being fit or physically taken care of yourself its seem like its a option of wanting or needing to do. Basically all it has made things alot easier in todays world, also has done some affect in the being creative in our minds and bodys, however it's affects are being made and done by choices we are making in our lives.

In today's global society technology has become necessary and a valuable tool. In life there are pros and cons, positives and negatives to everything we do. For this reason I believe there are just as many reasons to refer to technology as a necessary evil as there is to refer to it as a valuable tool. That I believe would depend on the type of technology and the use of it. Education and the possibility of globalization rely heavily on the use of today's technology.

Is technology a necessary evil? The positive thing that technology helps me everyday is by having my bills paid on line, not waiting in long lines ups or even driving in a snow storm to make sure things are paid on time. but in another sense there is always the fear of doing somethng for the first time.
I think that technology can affect people, students, teachers and even bussiness in a positive and negative way.

Without technology we wouldn't be able to take this course right now, in almost the comfort of our own home. I have to say that, highspeed has just come our way in maybe in the last 5 yrs. We used to have dial up for a long while. So yes, with the use of technology we have come along way. Our community has alot to do with technology, the school in our community has the students doing alot with technology. It sure is a positive tool that we should have access to. I feel that it is important in todays society. As for the evil aspect of technology, child predators have so much access with children on line.

Is Technology a necessary evil? My opinion would be somewhat yes and somewhat no.
The yes part meaning there is some good points and bad points on any topic, technology is not available to all people, as heidi has stated as well the obesity rate is much larger due to technology. The stats are on the rise. The no part would be all the things you can actually do online with the help of the web, anything is accessible .I do all my online banking online I keep track of all my things online the only thing I do not like is the privacy issue. People get hacked everyday ,identites are stolen, your life can actually be wiped out on here as well.
I chat on a daily basis on msn and on facebook which is time consuming. You look at the clock and your day has passed.Imagine what else can take up time on the web.I personally enjoy it. I haved learned alot from my children as well my daughter types faster then me ,she can find things quicker then me as well .
Most likely during this course she will be helping me out with little things here and there, I know she will be shocked to hear me asking her for help.Todays generations are more at eas ewith tech then the older generations.More power to them .

I believe that the computer is not necessarily evil because it all boils down to the person who is using the computer. people who use it for knowledge and for learning is very usfull and not evil at all but people who want to use the computer in a bad way, can use it that way. This means evil.

No I don't think technology is necessary evil because we learn a lot from it and its here anyways, here to stay.Techonology is good for our education and for our children's education.

I think technology is both good and bad,
good in a way that when we do need any
information on anything, just google it, no more
dictionaries or encyclopedias. Kids now have
cyber pet, they can design their room buy stuff
for them, feed them. You can find old friends you
haven't seen in 20 years, and find new friends.
Xbox 360's are becoming more popular with teenage
kids now,,they hook it up on tv, chat and play games
with other kids with xbox360 all over the world.
I remember when the first game we had way back
was atari. We can bank online and shop online.
But the bad side of it is most kids do stay inside
and sit in front of the computer, when they can be
playing outside, being more active, it's not just kids too,
it's everybody. And ya like they mentioned a couple times,
,when there's a power outage, you are cut off from the
whole world, what do u do then, just wait for the powers to go back on.

Technology, it is a good tool or a bad too? Well, that depends of the person whose using it. Today’s technology is just what you make of it. Take the internet for instance. It has certainly opened up a whole new world, one that offers a new way to explore. We can meet new people, pay our bills, and watch movies. The flip side to this “new world”: online gambling, exploitation of children, cyber space bullying, etc.

The 21st century certainly brings on new changes, a new playing field, but one that can be over whelming or exciting. I guess it’s just how you make it. As Captain Planet would say “The power is yours”.

I think Technology itself is not a necessary evil.... It has helped us speed things up ....catching up with society as it keeps growing and growing. It keeps us in touch with family from a distance without costing too much, ... Everyone enjoys the new tech's that are introduced especially the younger generation with cell phones, IpoDs etc..they can do alot including going on the net...

We have come a long way...and theres still a lot more to go :)

I feel that technology can really impact us in both aspects, but it can be a necessary tool for today's society, and also it can be used to hurt other people to. I feel that if people are not careful with how the computer is used that it can be a dangerous place to be. Me, myself, I try very hard not to use the computer too much for personal information on yhe computer because I know there are people who can have access to that. I don't shop on line at all. I only use the free samples for games. Computers are great for recreational uses and for research or things likes distant education. I am very cautious about how I use the computer. I know the future is approaching fast and the computer will be all that everyone will be using, but still writing letters and sending family members or a friends letters still has a personal touch to all our loved ones. Computers are becoming the way of the future, but being careful will have to become more of a necessity.

I feel there is good and bad in everything we encounter in our lives, the way we react to it is what makes the difference. If we view technology as totally "evil" then that is what we will focus on and it will be just that. Not everyone is going to embrace technology; however if we make it a conscience effort to focus on the positive aspects while keeping a diligent eye on the harmful then technology can and will grow into an amazing resource.

I don't think technology is necessarily evil. There are advantages and disadvantages to technlogy.First, people can see it evil because of the the possible dangers that can be a target for, such as women and children being lured into a predator, and for all people can to be targeted for identity theft, hacking, credit card theft, access to personal information. Also, there are people out on the computer wanting to catch thieves and predators, so there is both evil and good, which makes sense to me. Everything has have a positve and a negative to it.Just like ourselves there is a postive and negative and to have it balanced in our lives. Couldn;t we apply the same thing to technology? Our children today do spend more time on chatting with their friends and sometimes to strangers, so it all goes back to the parents to inform their children about the possible dangers of internet and the limit to sit there with a computer. So, if used properly by all mankind, I think less problems and dangers will happen. The advantages of computers is being able to get work done online faster and less paper to waste. Would that be a good thing for less lumber to cut just to make paper? when we can actually sit on a computer and just type away. So, I think the truth lies at the hands of the owners of the computers and technology. If used proberly then it would be an advantage, but if abused, then too it could be an evil thing. What I see in the community around me is that there is more time spent at home on the computer and less time spent on activities, exercise, socializing, less quality time with family members, and for the youth to actually be out there in the real world making the best of themselves and discovering who they are.

Is technology a necessary evil??
Not really,,My thoughts are really shady. I miss writing letters to my friends from other places, the joy of mailing a letter and even waiting for one. Now they are just a bitton and click away, and that's still good. I came a across a flat in town one day, and that cell phone really does wonders. I really can't name every technological item, but they really make our lives a little easier............

I really don't know what to think about technology. Sometimes I think life is too easy online, and then I think that it's an awsome tool to have.
I do not like to talk on the phone myself, and being online, msn, facebook, it is way easier for me to talk. I don't even have to call anyone anymore. We are leaving the world of telephones and paper, which I think is really cool.
On the other hand, I even see myself not having to leave my house for anything anymore. I rely on cyberspace for the outside world.
In the future, everything will have to do with technology, we won't even need to deal with people anymore :)
So, Some ppl may think it is evil, and some ppl may think it's the best thing for this world

I would think it depends on who is using the technology, in some cases it helps people with disabilties and is not evil, but in other cases it can be used to make things that are able to destroy things. which in that way would be evil.

The user of Technology determines if it is a danger/evil or not. Some may use it wrongly, other users may be harmless so therefor technology wouldnt be evil/dangerous.

Is TECHNOLOGY NECESSARY EVIL?
Necessary? Indeed. Evil? In my opinion no. Technology is not in any way shape or form evil. Evil cannot be anything, evil is only what we(people) make it. We see all of these horrific news reports, that scare me witless, and in many instances would cease to exist if society didn’t have the technological advancements that we do today. However, the world is what we( people) make it, we make the decisions, and only we can create any evil .
Like stated in this well- known quote; “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” John Fitzgerald Kennedy, I am a firm believer in progress, change and basically moving forward, so in my opinion the technological advancements the society has actualized in this century are not only convenient, they are essential. It is simply our responsibility to “test drive” these products for future generations, it is also our responsibility to insure that all the negative aspects or possibilities that these innovative ideas create are subdued or resolved. When this task is executed, as it always is, the technology will be accepted and embraced by more and more people everyday.
In all fairness to those who feel technology is a necessary evil, or those of you who feel that it is odd watch TV in a vehicle or to have one hanging on your bedroom ceiling. Everything has imperfections we, as a society will never get it exactly right; the puzzle will never quite fit. The world will never be perfect and evil will never be far, Perhaps this inevitable flaw is what drives and motivates this need, that we all possess, to move forward.

Technolgy is the way that people communicate in most societies. People have become so used to technology that it is the norm now, and to just be without it would be difficult. Like many socities, it can be good or evil. It's no worse then the things peole face in their every day lives, maybe a little safer. It is only evil if people do not know how to use it, or chose to use it in a negative way.

Defining technology as inventions that make our lives easier is what I believe is a necessary evil because there is all types of tech. all around us. It doesnt necessarly have to be computers and the internet which pose risks for children to be exposed to sexual preditors but it can be the flat screen you just bought or the digital camera you got your little girl for her birthday. Technology is everywhere and I think it's just easier to embrace it but also be very decerning.

I do not think that technology is evil I mean I don't like the weapons that can be developed and the loss of jobs due to it but I think it equals out with the good, that i could not call it evil! I love tech! I support it but I think we all so need to balance it out with the traditional skills and way of life especially in my community! I am a big believer that technology has made us lazy in certain ways and sometimes you see more children staying in to play ninetendo games and watch tv rather then playing outdoors and be physically active!! so there are good and bad qualities but we need to keep up to date and work with it!

I feel like technology is not evil if we put it to good use. Alot of people depend on these technologies of one kind or another. The good I have seen is to the advantage to those who depend on certain things these new devices are capable of doing. for example when I was observing a nurse working with a child with an vision problem and it worked for this child and that nurse said that they would be lost without all of these new devices and that the child would be in far worse shape without the new technologies that we have today. So I feel that if used in the right manner these new technologies are wonderful

Im not to crazy about chatting with people i nver met at all.I just like to stick to the basics. To me I don't see as a problem but maybe others do.

On a personal note, the technology used within my immediate surroundings have not created much of a splash. I have seen it as a way of people to keep tabs on one another and be stalkers in a subtle way, that is if it exists.

I see insults, negative comments or provocativeness within this world of tech.

Where is the social positiveness? I have not yet to see within my surroundings. Last summer I have disconnected the cable...Yes I have...some would think this was drastic. Its summer, who wants to be couped up inside all day long to watch tv, I certainly don't nor do I want my children to adopt such a behavior.

My child have to achieve a certain grade to continue to use his xbox and without the grades I want...not technology for you mister.

This summer, my plans are simple. No TV...No Games, unless he has worked a full week for which I plan to make him a summer job chart that my husband and I will pay him to do. Learn to work for money and appreciate the little things that technology has to offer.

This is reality.
